Today was a happy first day of school for my girls in South Pasadena. As kids headed back to classrooms across the city, I thought it was a good time to answer one of the questions I hear from families who are thinking about buying a home here:
“If we buy a house in South Pasadena, which school will our kids attend?”
It’s an important question — and one that can have a major impact on a family’s home search.
South Pasadena is served by the South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD), a relatively small K–12 district with three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. But while the district itself is compact, the elementary school attendance boundaries are divided into specific areas. That means two homes that are only a few blocks apart can potentially have different elementary schools.
If you’re considering buying a home in South Pasadena, understanding these boundaries before you make an offer is something I strongly recommend.
How South Pasadena School Boundaries Work
For most families, the starting point is your home address.
SPUSD assigns elementary students to one of three neighborhood elementary schools based on attendance areas:
- Arroyo Vista Elementary School
- Marengo Elementary School
- Monterey Hills Elementary School
The district provides a School Locator by Street and attendance boundary information to help families determine their designated home school. SPUSD specifically instructs new families to determine their home school and verify their address through the district's official resources before completing registration.
This is particularly important when you're buying real estate.
A listing might say that a property is "near" a particular school. A third-party website might even show a particular school as the assigned school. But proximity is not the same thing as attendance eligibility.
The school your child attends is determined by the district's attendance boundaries and enrollment rules — not simply by which school is closest to your front door.
That is why I always recommend verifying the exact property address directly with SPUSD.
The Three South Pasadena Elementary Schools
Arroyo Vista Elementary
Arroyo Vista Elementary is located at 335 El Centro Street and serves students in grades K–5. The school is centrally located and is one of South Pasadena's three neighborhood elementary schools.
Arroyo Vista is also part of the larger SPUSD community, meaning students generally continue on to South Pasadena Middle School for grades 6–8 and South Pasadena High School for grades 9–12.
Marengo Elementary
Marengo Elementary School is located at 1400 Marengo Avenue and serves students in grades K–5.
One thing that makes Marengo especially interesting for some families is its Mandarin Dual Language Immersion program. SPUSD currently identifies Marengo as one of the elementary schools offering Dual Language Immersion, with Mandarin offered at Marengo.
However, Dual Language Immersion is a separate consideration from simply living within the Marengo attendance boundary. Families interested in the program need to follow the district's enrollment and lottery procedures.
Monterey Hills Elementary
Monterey Hills Elementary School is located at 1624 Via Del Rey and serves students in grades K–5.
Monterey Hills is also home to SPUSD's Spanish Dual Language Immersion program. The school has received several recognitions over the years, including National Blue Ribbon School recognition.
Again, living within a particular elementary attendance area and participating in a specialized program are two different things. If Dual Language Immersion is important to your family, make sure you understand the current enrollment requirements rather than assuming your home address automatically guarantees placement.
What Happens After Elementary School?
One of the nice things about South Pasadena is that the elementary schools feed into the same middle and high school.
Students who attend one of the three SPUSD elementary schools generally move on to:
Grades 6–8: South Pasadena Middle School
Grades 9–12: South Pasadena High School
SPUSD confirms that current fifth graders at South Pasadena elementary schools are automatically enrolled at South Pasadena Middle School for sixth grade, while current eighth graders at South Pasadena Middle School are automatically enrolled at South Pasadena High School for ninth grade.
For many families, this means the elementary school boundary is the biggest school-related consideration when shopping for a home in South Pasadena.
Once your children reach middle school, the entire district feeds into South Pasadena Middle School, and then into South Pasadena High School.
Why School Boundaries Matter When Buying a Home
If you're a buyer with young children, I would put school attendance boundaries fairly high on your list of things to verify before purchasing.
You might find a home that checks almost every box:
Great neighborhood.
Nice floor plan.
Good backyard.
Walkable location.
Close to parks and restaurants.
And then you discover that the property is assigned to a different elementary school than you expected.
This is why I encourage buyers to think about the property and the school assignment together, rather than treating the school question as something to figure out after you've already purchased the home.
It's also worth remembering that school boundaries don't necessarily follow the way we think about neighborhoods.
A street name, ZIP code, or general neighborhood label doesn't necessarily tell you which elementary school a property is assigned to. In some cases, properties that feel very close geographically can fall into different attendance areas.
And that's exactly why the district's address verification tool is so important.
Can My Child Attend a Different South Pasadena Elementary School?
Potentially — but don't assume that you can simply choose whichever school you prefer.
SPUSD has an open enrollment process for families who want their child to attend a school other than the designated home school. The district's current registration information explains that new families first determine their home school, while requests for another school are handled separately through the district's enrollment procedures.
There can also be lotteries and enrollment priorities depending on the program, grade level, and timing.
For example, SPUSD's 2026–2027 elementary registration process included a new-family TK/Kindergarten lottery, as well as separate Dual Language Immersion lotteries. The district also notes that placement can be affected by available space.
So if you're buying a home because you specifically want your child at a particular elementary school, don't rely on the assumption that you'll be able to transfer later.
Start with the property's designated attendance area and then talk directly with SPUSD about any alternative enrollment options.
What About Transitional Kindergarten?
If you have a younger child, you may also want to understand how Transitional Kindergarten (TK) fits into the picture.
SPUSD currently offers TK at Arroyo Vista, Monterey Hills, and, depending on classroom availability and enrollment, Marengo. For the 2026–2027 school year, SPUSD states that children who turn four by September 1 are eligible for TK.
TK placement can involve additional considerations, so families with preschool-age children should check the district's current requirements and enrollment information rather than assuming the same rules that apply to traditional kindergarten.
This is another example of why I recommend looking at the current school-year information rather than relying on an old real estate listing or a third-party school website.
A Quick Checklist for Homebuyers
If schools are an important part of your South Pasadena home search, here's the process I recommend:
1. Identify the exact property address.
Don't rely solely on a neighborhood name or ZIP code.
2. Check the SPUSD School Locator.
Use the district's official address lookup to determine the property's designated elementary school.
3. Confirm directly with SPUSD.
This is the most important step.
School boundaries, enrollment procedures, capacity, and programs can change. The district is the final authority on whether your child is eligible to attend a particular school.
4. Ask about your child's specific grade.
A property may have different enrollment considerations depending on whether your child is entering TK, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, or high school.
5. Ask about specialized programs separately.
If you're interested in Spanish or Mandarin Dual Language Immersion, don't assume the neighborhood boundary automatically guarantees placement.
6. Verify before making your purchase decision.
If school assignment is one of the reasons you're buying a particular property, get confirmation before you make an offer or, at minimum, before you remove contingencies.
One Important Disclaimer for Buyers
I want to emphasize this because school information is important enough that you should not rely on a real estate website, MLS listing, Zillow, Redfin, or even this blog as the final word.
School attendance boundaries and enrollment policies can change. Third-party websites may also contain outdated or inaccurate school assignment information. Always confirm the current attendance boundary and your child's enrollment eligibility directly with the South Pasadena Unified School District before making a real estate decision.

Buying a Home in South Pasadena With Schools in Mind
For families moving to South Pasadena, the school question is often much bigger than simply asking, "Which school is closest to this house?"
You're really asking:
Where will my kids go to school?
Will they be able to stay in the same district as they get older?
What elementary school will they attend?
How does that fit into our daily routine?
Are there programs that are important to our family?
And, of course, does this particular home make sense for us long-term?
That's why I think school boundaries should be part of the conversation from the beginning of your home search.
South Pasadena is a relatively compact community, but the differences between neighborhoods can matter when you're looking at a specific property. If you're comparing two homes, the elementary school assignment can become one of the factors that helps you decide which property is the better fit for your family.

On a personal note, my girls have absolutely loved growing up in South Pasadena, and we've had such a wonderful experience at their elementary school so far.
