One of the questions I get from clients all the time is, "What's your favorite restaurant in Pasadena?"
It's honestly a tough question because Pasadena has so many great places to eat. Whether you're planning a date night, celebrating a special occasion, or just looking for somewhere new to try, there are countless options within a few blocks of each other.
As someone who lives nearby and spends a lot of time in Pasadena, one of the things I appreciate most is how easy it is to enjoy a night out here. You don't have to fight traffic from one place to another. You can park once, walk to dinner, grab dessert, stop for a drink, and just enjoy the atmosphere.
It's one of the many reasons I love this city, and it's something I always share with clients who are thinking about moving to Pasadena.
If you're looking for some ideas for your next date night, here are a few of my favorite spots in Old Pasadena and the Playhouse District.
Why I Love Date Nights in Pasadena
One thing that makes Pasadena different from many parts of Los Angeles is how walkable it is.
Old Pasadena has a great energy without feeling overwhelming. The streets are lined with historic buildings, outdoor patios, local shops, and restaurants that stay busy throughout the week. Just a few blocks away, the Playhouse District has its own personality with a slightly quieter feel, but just as many great places to eat.
I think that's part of what makes living here so appealing. It's not just about the homes—it's about being able to enjoy your neighborhood.
Some of my favorite evenings are the simple ones: grabbing dinner, walking around Colorado Boulevard afterward, and stopping somewhere for dessert before heading home.
My Favorite Date Night Restaurants in Old Pasadena
Union
If I had to recommend one restaurant that almost everyone enjoys, Union would probably be near the top of my list.
The atmosphere is warm without feeling too formal, and the handmade pasta is excellent. It's one of those restaurants that's great for anniversaries, birthdays, or even a casual Friday night when you want something a little nicer.
If you're planning to go on a weekend, I'd definitely recommend making a reservation.
Agnes Restaurant & Cheesery
Agnes is one of those places that feels like a neighborhood favorite.
It's part restaurant and part cheese shop, and the menu changes with the seasons, which gives you a reason to come back. Their outdoor patio is tucked away enough that it feels surprisingly quiet, even though you're just minutes from the heart of Old Pasadena.
It's a great place if you enjoy sharing small plates and trying different wines together.
Bone Kettle
Whenever someone asks me for something a little different, Bone Kettle is usually one of the first places that comes to mind.
Their Southeast Asian-inspired menu is fantastic, and they're well known for their slow-cooked bone broth. The cocktails are great too, and the whole restaurant has a fun, modern vibe that's perfect for date night.
Sushi Roku
You really can't go wrong with sushi for date night.
Sushi Roku has been a Pasadena favorite for years, and it's easy to see why. The fish is consistently fresh, the atmosphere feels upscale without being intimidating, and the outdoor seating is great when the weather is nice.
Maestro
If you're celebrating something special, Maestro is worth checking out.
The steaks are excellent, the cocktails are well done, and it has a polished atmosphere that's perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or any occasion where you want to make the evening feel a little more memorable.
Some Hidden Patios I Love
One thing I enjoy about Pasadena is that some of the best outdoor dining isn't immediately obvious.
There are patios tucked behind historic buildings and quiet corners that many people walk right past without realizing they're there.
The Raymond 1886
The Raymond has one of my favorite outdoor patios anywhere in Pasadena.
It's surrounded by mature trees and historic architecture, and it almost feels like you've left the city for the evening. Whether you're stopping by for brunch, dinner, or just cocktails, it's always a great experience.
Granville Pasadena
Granville is one of those restaurants that's consistently good.
The menu has something for just about everyone, which makes it an easy choice if you can't decide where to eat. Their patio is also a great place to enjoy dinner on warm summer evenings.
Magnolia House
Technically it's over near Lake Avenue, but I think Magnolia House deserves a spot on this list.
The outdoor patio is one of my favorites for drinks. The string lights, landscaping, and relaxed atmosphere make it easy to lose track of time.
Don't Overlook the Playhouse District
Old Pasadena gets most of the attention, but I think the Playhouse District deserves a lot more credit than it gets.
It has some incredible restaurants, beautiful historic buildings, and a slightly quieter atmosphere that makes it feel like a hidden gem.
If you haven't spent much time there, I'd definitely recommend exploring it.
Bar Chelou
Bar Chelou has quickly become one of the most talked-about restaurants in Pasadena.
The food is creative without being overcomplicated, the wine list is excellent, and the space has a cozy European feel that makes it perfect for date night.
U Street Pizza
Sometimes the best date nights don't have to be fancy.
U Street Pizza is a great example of that. Grab a pizza, order a couple of drinks, and enjoy a relaxed evening together before taking a walk around the neighborhood.
El Portal
El Portal has been a Pasadena favorite for years.
If you're craving Mexican food, it's hard to beat. The patio has a fun atmosphere, and it's a great place whether you're on a date or meeting friends for dinner.
Make an Evening Out of It
One of my favorite things about Pasadena is that dinner is usually just the beginning.
Afterward, you can grab ice cream, stop for coffee, browse some of the local shops, or simply walk around and enjoy the neighborhood. If there's a show at the Pasadena Playhouse, even better.
That's one of the biggest reasons people enjoy living here. There are always things to do without having to drive all over Los Angeles.
It's One of the Reasons I Love Selling Homes in Pasadena
When I help buyers find a home, we're not just looking at bedrooms, bathrooms, or square footage.
We're talking about lifestyle.
Can you walk to your favorite coffee shop?
Is there somewhere nearby to grab dinner on a Friday night?
Can you spend an afternoon exploring local businesses without getting in your car?
Those things matter.
It's why so many people fall in love with Pasadena after spending just a little time here.
Whether you're looking at a condo near Old Pasadena, a Craftsman home in Madison Heights, or a neighborhood close to the Playhouse District, having all of these restaurants and local businesses nearby adds so much to everyday life.
Thinking About Moving to Pasadena?
If you're considering buying or selling a home in Pasadena—or if you're just curious about what different neighborhoods have to offer—I'd be happy to help.
One of my favorite parts of my job is introducing people to the communities I know so well. It's not just about finding the right house; it's about finding the neighborhood and lifestyle that feels like home.
And if we happen to grab dinner at one of these restaurants afterward, even better!
