November is one of my favorite times of year in the Pasadena and South Pasadena area. The weather starts to cool down, the holiday decorations begin to go up, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy the community without having to travel far.
Whether you're planning a family outing, looking for something to do over Thanksgiving weekend, or simply want to explore more of the area, November is a great time to get out and experience what makes these neighborhoods special.
As a local real estate agent, I spend a lot of time in Pasadena and South Pasadena. One of the things I appreciate most about these communities is how much there is to do close to home, from neighborhood parks and local farmers markets to seasonal events and holiday traditions.
Here are some of my favorite Thanksgiving and November activities in Pasadena, South Pasadena, and nearby communities to add to your calendar this fall.
1. Start Thanksgiving morning at the Rose Bowl Turkey Trot
Thursday, November 26, 2026
The Rose Bowl Turkey Trot is a fun way to kick off Thanksgiving morning before heading home for the holiday meal.
The annual 5K takes place around the Rose Bowl Stadium and welcomes runners, walkers, and families looking to get some exercise in before the festivities begin. You don't have to be a serious runner to enjoy it. It's more about getting outside, spending time with the community, and starting the holiday on a positive note.
The event is especially appealing for families who want to establish a Thanksgiving tradition of their own.
The Rose Bowl is also one of those places that never gets old, whether you're attending an event, walking around the stadium, or simply enjoying the surrounding Arroyo Seco.
Registration is required, so check the official event website for details before heading out.
2. Enjoy a Thursday evening at the South Pasadena Farmers' Market
The South Pasadena Farmers' Market is one of those local spots that makes it easy to enjoy an ordinary weekday evening.
Held along Meridian Avenue near the South Pasadena Metro A Line station, the market is a great place to pick up fresh produce, browse local vendors, grab something to eat, and spend a little time outside.
November is an especially nice time to visit, with seasonal produce and the beginning of the holiday shopping season.
It's also a good opportunity to support local businesses and meet some of the people who make South Pasadena such a welcoming community.
If you're planning Thanksgiving dinner at home, you may even find a few ingredients or locally made items to bring to the table.
The market takes place on Thursday evenings. Check the South Pasadena Farmers' Market website for current hours and vendor information.
3. Take the kids to Garfield Park in South Pasadena
Sometimes the best family activity doesn't require a ticket or much planning.
Garfield Park is one of South Pasadena's most popular neighborhood parks, with playgrounds, picnic areas, open green space, and plenty of room for kids to run around. Birthday parties are always on at this park.
November is a great time to spend an afternoon here, especially when the weather is comfortable enough to enjoy being outdoors.
Bring a picnic, let the kids play, or take a walk around the park before heading home.
As a parent, I appreciate having places like this nearby. It's an easy way to get the kids outside and spend time together without having to plan an entire day around it.
Garfield Park is also a good reminder of what makes South Pasadena appealing to families. The neighborhood has a strong sense of community, and having parks and everyday activities close by is something many people value when choosing where to live.
4. Explore Old Pasadena and get a head start on holiday shopping
Old Pasadena is a great place to spend a November afternoon, especially as the holiday season gets underway.
The historic district has a mix of independent shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and boutiques, making it easy to spend a few hours walking around and discovering something new.
If you're starting your holiday shopping early, it's also a nice alternative to the larger shopping centers.
I always enjoy the combination of historic architecture and local businesses throughout Old Pasadena. You can walk down Colorado Boulevard, explore some of the smaller side streets, and stop for a meal or coffee along the way.
It's also a good place to bring visiting family or friends who want to experience a little more of Pasadena.
For Thanksgiving weekend, consider making a day of it by combining a walk around Old Pasadena with lunch or dinner at one of the neighborhood's many restaurants.
5. Experience the Enchanted Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens
Beginning November 22, 2026
One of the most popular seasonal activities in the area is the Enchanted Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge.
The after-hours experience transforms portions of the gardens into an illuminated walking trail, with large-scale light installations, colorful displays, and music.
It's a beautiful way to experience Descanso Gardens in a completely different setting.
The event is especially popular with families, but it's also a great option for a date night or an evening out with friends.
The walk is approximately one mile, so I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a jacket. November evenings can get chilly, especially in the gardens.
Timed-entry tickets are required, and popular dates can sell out. The event is closed on Thanksgiving Day, so plan accordingly.
For tickets and current information, visit the Descanso Gardens website.
6. Celebrate Thanksgiving with the community in Pasadena
Thanksgiving is also a good opportunity to connect with the community and give back.
Union Station Homeless Services has been serving the Pasadena community for decades, including through its annual Dinner in the Park tradition.
The program provides Thanksgiving meals and support to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
For 2026, Union Station is organizing Thanksgiving-related meal activities on November 18, 24, and 25, along with a turkey drive on November 16 and 17.
There are opportunities to contribute through donations and volunteering, depending on the organization's current needs.
I think this is a meaningful way to spend part of the holiday season, especially for families looking to teach their kids about giving back and helping others.
You can find current volunteer opportunities and donation information at Union Station Homeless Services.
7. Make time for a local walk around Pasadena
Not every November activity needs to be an organized event.
One of the things I enjoy most about living and working in this area is simply getting outside and exploring the neighborhoods.
Pasadena has so many interesting streets, historic homes, and architectural details that it's worth slowing down and taking a closer look.
The neighborhoods around the Arroyo Seco, the historic streets of South Pasadena, and the residential areas near Garfield Park all offer something different.
If you're looking for a relaxed weekend activity, consider taking a walk through a neighborhood you've never explored before.
You might discover a favorite coffee shop, a new park, or a street you hadn't noticed before.
If you want something different, a walk around the Rose Bowl loop is always fun and motivating.
For anyone interested in architecture and local history, this is also a great time of year to appreciate the variety of homes throughout Pasadena and South Pasadena.
From historic Craftsman homes to Spanish-style properties and more contemporary architecture, there's a lot to see.
8. Take a short drive to La Cañada Flintridge for a fall outing
La Cañada Flintridge is another great option for a November outing, especially if you're looking to spend more time outdoors.
The community is home to Descanso Gardens, but there are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy the surrounding foothill scenery.
A morning walk, lunch nearby, or an afternoon visit to the gardens can make for a relaxing day outside the city.
I also think La Cañada is worth exploring if you're considering different communities in the Pasadena area.
The neighborhoods have their own character, and the combination of residential streets, outdoor spaces, and access to the foothills is part of what makes the area attractive to many families.
It's a nice reminder that you don't have to go far from Pasadena to find a different setting for the day.
9. Support local businesses on Small Business Saturday
Saturday, November 28, 2026
Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity to support the local businesses that help make Pasadena and South Pasadena such interesting places to live.
Whether you're shopping for holiday gifts, grabbing coffee, or trying a new restaurant, consider spending part of the day at a locally owned business.
Old Pasadena is an easy place to start, but there are also plenty of independent businesses throughout South Pasadena and the surrounding neighborhoods.
One of the things I appreciate about these communities is that local businesses are part of everyday life. They're not just places to shop. They're also places where neighbors meet, families spend time together, and people get to know their community.
It's worth making an effort to support them, especially during the holiday season.
10. Start a new Thanksgiving weekend tradition
One of the best things about living in the Pasadena area is that there are so many ways to enjoy a weekend without having to leave the community.
You could start Thanksgiving morning at the Rose Bowl, spend Friday exploring Old Pasadena, and finish the weekend with a walk through a local neighborhood.
Or keep things simple with a family picnic, a visit to the farmers' market, or an afternoon at one of the area's parks.
The best part is that you don't have to do everything in one weekend. There are plenty of activities throughout November, so you can pick a few that fit your schedule.
For families with kids, I think these smaller outings can become some of the most memorable traditions. They're easy to repeat, don't require much planning, and give everyone a chance to spend time together.
Thinking about making Pasadena or South Pasadena home?
One of the reasons I enjoy working in Pasadena and South Pasadena is that there's so much to appreciate beyond the homes themselves.
The parks, local businesses, neighborhood events, and everyday activities all contribute to what makes these communities feel like home.
If you're considering a move to Pasadena, South Pasadena, or one of the surrounding communities, November is a great time to explore the area and get a feel for what daily life might look like.
Whether you're a first-time homebuyer, looking for more space for your family, or thinking about selling your current home, I'm always happy to help you get familiar with the local market and the different neighborhoods.
